Pest Management vs Pest Eradication
What’s The Difference?
When it comes to pest control, you might be wondering, how pest management differs from pest eradication? To help explain each of these concepts and their usages, this Blog answers the following questions:
- What is pest management?
- What is pest eradication?
- Are both pest management & pest eradication necessary?
What is Pest Management?
Pest management is basically the overall task of pest control. It’s used to reduce and, if necessary, eliminate various pests so they don’t get out of control, wreak havoc, and pose health risks and hazards to humans.
When & Where Is It used?
Everywhere there are pests. Some areas are prone to greater numbers and species of pests due to having a favourable climate beloved by creepy crawlies. And, Queensland is one such place! This means that Queensland pest management activity must be vigilant compared to colder climates, with more varied seasons that are less hospitable to pests.
However, there are certain pests that seem to show up, no matter where you are, including:
- Wasps
- Cockroaches
- Rats & Mice
- Ants & Spiders
- Fleas & Silverfish
- Termites!
Why Is Important to Keep Pests Under Control?
Pests are not just an irritation – they can come with some very real risks and hazards for humans, such as:
- Disease | a number of pests carry disease-causing microorganisms that can be harmful to humans, and spread these via food and water contamination
- Structural Damage | certain pests cause structural damage to buildings by literally eating them from the inside out! Termites are a prime offender for this in Queensland.
- General Mayhem & Chaos | pests such as rats and mice will chew through parts of your house, like electrical wiring, cardboard and wood. This helps them to gain access into your home, and set up nice cosy nests in unwanted places!
What is Pest Eradication?
Pest eradication is used to destroy and completely wipe out a pest colony – it is typically used when there is the presence of a dangerous or destructive pest species in your home. While it sounds extreme, it’s an essential tool when it comes to protecting the structure of your home, and the health of your family.
For example, if you or your children have a severe allergy to insect bits, like bees and wasps, that can lead to death, you’ll want to eradicate any nests on your property to minimise the risk. The same goes for a termite infestation, when it is vital to act fast to eradicate all termite colonies in the vicinity before they can cause expensive damage!
DIY vs Professional Pest Eradication
Some folks are in favour of the Do It Yourself (DIY) approach to pest management and eradication. In some cases, DIY techniques can be effective – at least in the short term. However, it’s a good idea to think about how important it is for you to eradicate the pest invasion once and for all.
DIY is not the most reliable approach, as you may fail to completely eradicate the pest colony, in which case – you’ll have to start all over again! Particularly when your home and health could be seriously impacted, is this a risk you’re willing to take?
A licensed, professional pest control specialist will be able to effectively identify and treat pests in your home and surrounds. They’ll also conduct follow-up inspections to ensure that pest activity has ceased, and if it hasn’t, they will provide further treatment at no additional expense to you.
Are Both Pest Management & Pest Eradication Necessary?
Yes – they sure are! Why? Pest eradication is in itself a function and tool of effective pest management. In order to keep pests under control, it’s necessary to utilise:
- Prevention | obviously it’s much easier to keep pests out of your home and property in the first place, so pest prevention practices are a key component of making life easier!
- Eradication | given the devious and sneaky nature of unwanted creepy crawlies, they do find their way into your house and property from time to time – especially if you don’t have any prevention measures in place! When this happens, pest eradication is absolutely essential to deal firmly and effectively with an infestation.
